A Study on the Properties of Coffee in Korean Popular Songs

This study examines how 'coffee' is reproduced in the lyrics texts of Korean popular songs that have achieved great commercial success in Korean popular music since the 1990s but have been academically alienated according to a semiotic analysis method. In particular, it is probably because of the various properties of coffee that coffee-related songs have appeared, spread, and spread in many Korean popular songs. Therefore, this study attempted to systematically analyze the coffee properties in the lyrics of Korean popular songs. Coffee, which reflects social and cultural changes, was found to have properties such as 'faithful love between a man and a woman, flirting between lovers, a place to wait for a separated lover, a habitual coffee addiction to recall old memories, and a lover who soothes the sorrow of parting with caffeine'. In particular, the coffee-related lyrics text mainly deals with ‘love between a man and a woman’, and ‘love’ mainly deals with parting or longing, so the property of coffee goes beyond warmth and even functions as a substitute for a lover. The heat of the coffee cup also appeared as an attribute to express a lover's lips or a hot moment.
