A Study on Biographical Literature in the Early 20th Century with a Focus on the Newspapers and Books Published in the States

애국계몽기는 언론과 문학의 창작 주체인 지식인들 다수가 해외 망명이 불가피하였고 동일 인물이 조선이라는 지역적 경계를 뛰어넘어 다양한 창작 활동을 벌이던 시대였다. 특히 미주 지역의 신문인 <신한국보>와 <신한민보>는 광무 신문지법이 발효된 뒤에도 국내 언론과 달리 정치적인 사안들에 대해 자유롭고 강경한 태도를 견지하였다. <신한국보>와 <신한민보>의 여러 서사물 가운데 전기문학은 애국계몽기 문학의 특징을 여실히 보여주는데, 그 양상은 국내에서 발표된 전기문학이 전재되거나 요약되는 형태, 국내 발표의 동일한 저본을 두고 독자적인 국문 번역이 시도된 형태, 또는 단행본 전기가 출판된 형태 등 다양하다. 특히 신한민보사 발행의 <양의사합전>과 신한국보사 발행의 <대동위인안중근전>은 장인환, 전명운 의사의 스티븐스 저격 사건과 안중근 의사의 의거가 일어난 직후 단행본으로 출판된 것으로 전기 뒤에 의사들을 위한 의연금 모집에 참여한 미주 한인들의 명단을 부록으로 넣은 편집 체제가 독특하다. 이런 편집 체제는 의사들의 의거에 미주 노동 이민자들이 의연 모금으로 동참한 것을 기념함으로써 의사들의 전기가 동시대 민족 운동의 구심점이 되도록 한 것이다.

The United Korean News(新韓國報) and The New Korea(新韓民報) were published by the Korean immigrants in Hawaii and San Fransisco repectively in the first decade of 20th century. Here biographical literature was introduced to promote the idea of patriotic enlightenment to save Korea from Japan. Biography booklets, Two Patriots Biography(兩義士合傳), 1909 and Biography of Anjunggeun, the Great Patriot of the East(大東偉人安重根傳), 1911 were published by these two newspapers, with the appendix of the list of donors and their donations. This compilation of bioghrapy and the list of donors is unique, and it shows how Korean immigrants recognized literature in terms of the tool to enlighten themselves and encourage them to participate in liberation movement of Korea by placing their names next to the great patriots. Other than these two biography booklets, there are a lot of pieces of biographical literature in The United Korean News(新韓國報) and The New Korea(新韓民報), which are needed to be examined with a comparison of contemporary works of biography published in Korea.
