Martyr Ahn Choong-gun's Activities to Save the Nation and Their Political Meanings

안중근은 남북한 사람 모두가 추앙하는 몇 안 되는 민족영웅 중의 한 사람이다. 이다. 그는 독실한 천주교 신앙인으로서, 교육자로서 애국계몽운동가였고, 일제에 대항하여 무장독립투쟁을 전개한 용맹한 독립운동가였으며, 마침내 한국 침략의 원흉인 이토 히로부미(伊藤博文)를 총격으로 주살(誅殺)한 애국의사(愛國義士)였다. 안중근은 조국의 독립을 위해서라면 자신의 목숨까지도 아끼지 않는, 행동하는 실천가로서의 면모를 보였을 뿐만 아니라, 이상주의적 사상가로서의 면모까지 지니고 있는 동양평화론자였다. 본 연구에서는 안중근이 행했던 민족주의적 구국활동에 초점을 맞추어, 그가 행한 초기 의열투쟁과 해외 국권회복운동 시도, 애국계몽운동으로서의 교육사업, 식산진흥운동과 국채보상운동 참여, 의병 독립전쟁 가담활동, 이토 히로부미 저격 등을 살펴본다. 우리는 안중근의 민족주의적 구국활동의 분석을 통해 그가 천주교 신자로서 ‘행동하는 신앙’과 평화의 국제정치관, 그리고 애국애족의 정신에 입각하여 진정한 동양평화를 위해 투신한 세계평화주의자요, ‘열린 민족주의자’였다는 사실을 잘 간파할 수 있다.

Ahn Choong-gun is one of a few national heros who have been held in high esteem by both South and North Korean people. He was a faithful Roman Catholic, educator, an activist for patriotic enlightenment movement, a brave independence fighter leading armed struggles against Japan's colonial rule, and a patriotic martyr who eventually put to death Hirobumi Ito, one of the key figures responsible for the colonization of Korea. Not only was Ahn an sincere actionist who willingly devoted his life to Korea's independence, but he was also an oriental pacifist even with aspects of an idealist. Focusing on the nationalistic activities of Ahn Choong-gun, this article reviews his early noble combats, overseas movements to restore the national rights, educational projects as patriotic enlightenment movements, participation in Siksanjinheung Movement(a movement to encourage industrial development) and Kookchaebosang Movement(a movement to indemnify the national debt), the royal troops' entry into the independence war, and sniping of Hirobumi Ito. Through this analysis on his nationalistic activities, this article attempts to shed light on the fact that he was a cosmopolitan pacifist and 'open-minded nationalist' who dedicated himself to true peace of the Orient based on his 'religious belief in action' as a Catholic, peaceful view of international politics, and solid mind of devotion to his nation and people.
