백성욱 박사의 여성관에 관한 연구

A Study on Ph. D. Baek Sung-wook's View of Women

본 논문은 백성욱 박사의 여성관을 분석하기 위한 것이다. 이를 위해 여성과 남성 그리고 불교의 여성관, 백성욱 박사의 여성관, 백성욱 박사의 여성관에 대한 평가 및 의의를 살펴본 후 결론을 도출해본 것이다. 그는 독립운동가, 학자, 수행자, 정치인, 교육자로서 특히 한국 근현대불교사에서 중요한 위치를 차지하는 인물이다. 그는 국내외를 막론하고 한국인으로서 불교학 1호 박사로서 불교철학의 기본이론을 정립하고 금강경 독송을 기본으로 삼아 수행하여 수많은 걸출한 제자들을 배출했다. 또한 김일엽 스님, 손혜정 선생(보살), 그리고 정형재 여사 등과도 좋은 인연이 맺어지기도 했다. 백성욱 박사의 여성관은 크게 ①남자와 동등한 존재, ②음양의 상생·조화적 존재, ③존경대상으로서의 존재, ④아름다움·그리움·기다림의 상징적 존재 등으로 요약해 볼 수 있다. 그는 개화적 여성관을 가지고 단순한 남녀동등의 차원을 넘어 여성의 역할의 중요성을 강조하고 여성을 존대·우대를 실천한 삶을 살았다고 할 수 있다. 백성욱 박사의 대·소우주, 생명, 사회, 인간, 여성 등에 대한 철학과 사상은 체계성·조화성·과학성·예술성이 함축되어 있고 박이정(博而精)의 특징을 지니고 있다. 그의 철학과 사상은 오늘과 미래의 나아갈 길을 밝히고 있다는 점에서 큰 의의를 지니고 있다.

This paper is to analyze Ph. D. Baek Sung-wook's view of women. To this end the paper is composed of 5 chapters titled introduction; women and men and women's views of Buddhism; Ph. D. Baek Sung-wook's women's view; evaluation and significance of Ph. D. Baek Sung-wook's view of women; and conclusion. As an independence activist, scholar, attendant, politician, and educator, he holds a particularly important position in the history of modern and contemporary Buddhism in Korea. He was the No.1 Ph. D. of Buddhism, both at home and abroad, and established the basic theory of Buddhist philosophy and performed the recitation practice of Diamond Sutra as the basis, producing numerous outstanding disciples. He also had a good relationship with Buddhist monk Ilyeop, Bodhisattva Son Hye-jeong, and wife Jeong Hyeong-jae. Dr. Baek Sung-wook's view of women can be summarized as ①existence equal to men, ②Yin-Yang's coexisting and harmonious existence, ③ existence as a respect object, ④ symbolic existence of beauty, longing, and waiting. He emphasized the importance of women's roles beyond simple gender equality with an enlightening view of women and lived a life of respect and preferential treatment for women. Ph. D. Baek Sung-wook's philosophy and ideas on the large and small space(universe), life, society, human beings, and women are implied by systematicity, harmony, scientificity, and artistry, and also feature broadness and precision. His philosophy and ideas have great significance in that they illuminate the way forward today and into the future.
