There has been a lot of the interest in vocabulary teaching and learning and much of research has focused on individual words. Learners have been encouraged to learn individual words and to make sentences by inserting them into extended grammatical structures. Although learners successfully learn grammar and a lot of individual words, they often produce awkward grammatical sentences. This is because of their lack of collocation competence. Learners have relatively few chances to repeatedly encounter typical word sequences and so they are more likely to translate from their unacceptable general vocabulary knowledge. A collocation is the relationship between two words or groups of words that often go together and form a common expression. Some combinations sound natural to native English speakers, but other combinations may be unnatural and sound wrong to native speakers. Learning collocation is an important part to learn the vocabulary of a language and to acquire fluency. This paper aims at suggesting a few activities which are accessible to Korea Polytechnics’ English class, in order to help Korea Polytechnics’ students to improve their collocation competence instead of just memorizing a lot of words as many as possible.
