질병위기와 연구개발투자의 가치관련성

The Value Relevance of R&D Investments During The Disease Crisis : The Focus on Pharmaceutical and Bio Industries

[연구목적] 질병위기 시에 투자자들이 가장 큰 관심을 가지는 산업군 중 하나인 제약·바이오 산업의 경우 매출 실현 이전에 대규모 연구개발투자가 이루어지는 특징을 가지고 있다. 따라서, 투자자들은 질병위기 시에 동 산업의 연구개발능력을 투자의사결정 판단요인으로 활용할 것으로 예상된다. 이에 본 연구는 투자자 관점에서 질병위기 시 제약바이오 산업의 연구개발투자에 대한 가치관련성 변화를 살펴보고자 한다. [연구방법] 본 연구는 2000년대 이후 발생한 2003년 사스(SARS), 2009년 신종플루(H1N1), 2015년 메르스(MERS)를 대상으로 Ohlson(1995) 가치평가 모형을 이용하여 연구개발투자에 대한 주가배수를 분석하여 가설을 검증한다. [연구결과] 분석 결과, 신종플루를 제외한 질병위기에서 제약바이오 산업의 비용화된 연구개발투자에 대한 주가배수는 질병위기 이전에 비해 유의하게 증가하였다. 추가적으로 2020년 발생한 COVID-19 위기를 대상으로 분석한 결과 이전의 질병위기와 다르게 비용화된 연구개발투자가 아닌 자산화된 개발비의 주가배수가 유의하게 증가함을 보고하였다. [연구의 시사점] 본 연구는 질병위기 시에 나타나는 투자자 반응과 관련한 실증적 증거를 제시함으로써 질병위기만의 차별적인 특징을 파악하였다는 데에 공헌점이 있다. 나아가 질병위기라는 시장위험을 구체적으로 제시한 본 연구의 결과는 COVID-19 위기를 중심으로 이루어진 국내 선행연구를 확장하여 질병위기 관련 연구에 기여할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

[Purpose] The cause of disease crisis in the capital market is Spreading of infectious disease. Therefore, the bio-pharmaceutical industry attracts the market investors attention during the disease crisis as rising health and medical demands. In this paper, we study the investors reaction to R&D investments of the bio-pharmaceutical industry during the disease crisis. [Methodology] We classify SARS in 2003, Swine Flu(H1N1) in 2009 and MERS in 2015 as the disease crisis. Also, we employ valuation multiples implied by the Ohlson(1995) model as a proxy for the market investors reaction. [Findings] We find that a pricing multiple on R&D expenditures of the bio-pharmaceutical industry is greater for the disease crisis excluding H1N1 than previous years. Moreover, We also find some suggestive evidence that there is the difference between COVID-19 and other disease crises of the market investors reaction of the R&D investments. [Implications] Our findings contribute to the related literature by presenting first empirical evidence of value relevance on the R&D investment of the bio-pharmaceutical industry using the disease crisis.
