A Study on Revision Rubric for Korean-English Translation based on Errors in Full-time Korean-English Translators

The present study aims at devising an effective set of revision parameters that can be used in assessing and revising Korean-English non-literary translation works by analyzing the errors in Korean-English translations of 23 full-time translators. More specifically, the study attempts to 1) identify major errors in the Korean-English translation works of full-time translators, 2) test suitability of 'NAATI error categories' for non-literary Korean-English translation works, and 3) make necessary modifications to NAATI categories to devise the best-fitting revision rubric for Korean-English non-literary translation works. Analyses found 369 cases of errors in the translations of 23 full-time translators, of which the most frequent type was ‘grammar and syntax’(159), followed by ‘distortion’(131) and ‘punctuation’(31). Analysis of the errors against the NAATI error categories showed that some error categories of NAATI require merging and some require further segmentation. Building on the analyses, a modified version of revision rubric is presented and the limitations and implications of the findings are discussed.
