현대국어 음운현상의 상대적 강도에 대하여

Treatise on Relative Strength of Phonological Phenomena in Modern Korean

지금까지 음운론은 음운현상이 동등한 가치를 가지는 것으로 전제하고 논의를 전개하고 있다. 그런데 국어의 다양한 음운현상을 다른 기준으로 볼 때 동등한 가치를 가지지 않을 수도 있다. 본고는 국어의 다양한 음운현상이 동등한 가치 혹은 강도나 세기를 가지는 것이 아니라는 가설 아래 두 가지 기준을 가지고 그것을 확인하려는 목적으로 진행되었다. 두 가지 기준은 다음과 같다. 첫째는 음운규칙이 적용되는 범위이고, 둘째는 음운규칙이 필수적으로 적용되는가 아닌가의 여부이다. 통시적으로도 규칙이 확장되거나 소멸중인 것이 있었는데 이는 첫 번째 기준인 규칙 적용의 범위라는 기준에 포함될 것이다. 형태·통사범주에 의존적인 규칙은 순수음운규칙보다 적용 범위가 협소하기 때문에 약한 강도를 가지고 있다고 보았다. 범주 의존적 규칙 중에는 규칙이 소멸과정에 있는 것도 있고 확장 중에 있는 것도 있었다. 순수음운규칙 중에는 필수적 규칙과 수의적 규칙이 구분되었다. 그 결과 도표<1>과 같은 순서로 음운현상의 강도가 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 새로운 이론을 만드는데 도움을 줄 수 있고 국어교육, 한국어교육, 정서법 등 국어정책에도 반영할 수 있을 것이다.

Existing works assume that all phonological phenomena hold same value. However, considering various characteristics of phonological phenomena in Korean, such assumption may not be true. The purpose of this paper is to identify the relativistic existence of difference in strength or value of various phonological phenomena in Korean, which are unlike the assumption of uniform strength or value considered in vocalization or nasalization, under two different categories. The two criteria are：certainty of the application, and the range of the phonological rule. This paper claims that due to relatively narrower range of morpho- syntatic category dependent rules such as tensefication that comes after predicate stem nasal sound compare to that of pure phonological rule such as nasal assimilation, morpho-syntatic category dependent rules are ‘weaker’. Among the morpho-syntatic category dependent rules, some are in the process of disappearance and some are in the process of expansion. Pure morphological rules can be further subdivided by compulsory rules and optional rules. Applying above criteria, relativistic strength of phonological phenomena is revealed as follow <diagram 1>. Such result will be beneficial for creation of new theory as well as Korean Language related policy such as education for natives, education for foreigners, and orthography.
