훈민정음 기원설은 훈민정음이 어느 문자의 계통을 이어 받아서 창제 되었는지 밝히려는 설명이나 학설이고, 훈민정음의 제자원리가 무엇인가를 연구하는 것이다. 훈민정음 기원설은 내용상으로는 모방설과 상형설로 나눌 수 있다. 안동에서 원본훈민정음이 발견되기까지는 모방설이 많은 학자들에 의해 제기 되었었고, 그 이후에는 상형설이 기원설의 주된 설로 자리 잡고 있었던 것이다. 지금도 모방설이 간간이 제기되고 있는 실정이다.鄭麟趾序에서도 말한 바와 같이 ‘正音之作 無所祖述而成於自然’이라 어느 문자를 모방함이 없이 독창적으로 이루어진 문자라고 하였다. 하지만 각국의 문자나 재래의 문자를 참고는 하였을 것이나 여러 가지 기원설이 제기되고 있는 것은 다른 문자들과 일부에서 같은 점이 있어서 일 것이다. 여러 기원설 중에서 고전기원설, 몽고자문자기원설, 기일성문도기원설, 상형설 등이 있다. 기원설에 대하여 자세히 논의 하고, 그 진위와 상형설에 의한 기원설을 고찰하고자 한다.
Hunminjeongum is a phonetic system of writing devised for and used exclusively in, the Korean language. It was no exaggeration for Jeong Inji(鄭麟趾) to say, when he wrote the preface to the Hunminjeongum(訓民正音) the Royal Rescript which presented this system to the Korean people. Among the thousands of kinds of writing developed by man, Hunminjeongum is outstanding in that, while others were the result of a gradual process of evolution, this was the product of one man, and was produced at a specific date practically in the form we have it now. The author particularly emphasized as objects of his work the desire to meet the needs of the common people by providing them with a means of expressing their thoughts in writing, and the hope of propagating a truly national culture. To quote again from the introduction to the Hunminjeongum. Secondly, pronunciation differs according to locality, but no different letters are given to allow for local dialects. Thirdly, Hunminjeongum which is mere novelty will cause hindrance to study, disadvantage and inefficiancy to administration. Fourthly, it is said that when a man is accused of a capital crime, Hunminjeongum will help him avoid being falsely charged and convicted by enabling him to make his statement clearly and correctly in Hunminjeongum. Fifthly, if we must invent Hunminjeongum it is a major matter requiring careful consideration and unanimous support both of common people and Government officials.
