국어 어원에 대한 탐구는 많은 진전이 있었지만 아직도 그 실마리를 찾지 못하고 있는 어휘들이 수없이 많다. 특히 생겨난 것이 우리 한민족의 역사와 괘를 같이하는 경우는 수천, 수만 년이 흘렀을 것이어서 도무지 그 변화 과정을 추측해 보기가 힘든 것이다. 같은 어족과의 비교 연구를 통해서도 그 편린을 찾아보기도 하지만, 수천 년이 지나더라도 생활이나 민속과 밀접하게 연관된 것들은 쉽사리 변하지 않는다는 점을 생각해 본다면 방언은 한 가닥 위안거리로 남아 있다고 볼 수 있다.그래서 우리말의 어원 탐구에 대한 해답은 방언이 그 실마리를 제시해 줄 때가 많다. 각 방언에는 지역마다 특이한 변이형이 존재하고 있지만 때로는 변이형이 아닌 아예 뿌리가 다른 형태들이 존재하고 있다. 이를 통해서 지역민들이 가진 사물에 대한 명명(命名)의 방식과, 각 지역민들의 의식구조 등을 추론해 볼 수 있을 것이다.
The study of the origin of Korean words has been greatly advanced. However there are a good many words whose origin we don't have a clue to. We hardly guess the change of some words that came about tens of thousands of years ago. We attempt to find a hint for the origin of those words through the comparative study of the same linguistic family. Because the things that are closely relevant to life and the custom are not easily changeable, we can regard dialects as the clue to reveal the origin of some words. Therefore we can assume that dialects are possible clues to the origins of some words. Some dialects have the local variants and others have the variants whose roots are different. We can also infer the method of naming the things and the thinking structure of local people.
