본 연구에서는 근대 한국소설사에서 가장 중요한 작가 중의 한사람으로 평가받는 이태준이 지니고 있었던 언어관의 특성을, 전통적인 한국사회의 지식인 일반의 특성 및 근대 개화 사상가들의 내적 세계와 관련지어 살펴보았다. 잘 알려진 바처럼 이태준은 언어의 문제를 매우 중요하게 생각하고 있었던 작가였다. 그런데 그가 중시하고 있었던 것은 특히 문자 언어의 문제였다. 그는 문자를 사물 자체의 의미와 동일시하는 태도를 보일 정도로 언어의 의미를 절대화하고 있었다. 그런데 여기에는 문자를 중심으로 하는 의사소통을 중시하였던 전통적인 지식인들의 태도를 지향하는 이태준의 강한 엘리트 의식이 반영되어 있다는 것이 본 연구의 판단이다. 이와 같은 이태준의 사고방식은 서구적 근대를 수용하고 이를 바탕으로 대중들을 계몽하려는 그의 의식에도 반영되어 있었다. 여기에는 구한말 개화파 지식인들의 근대 지향적 태도를 계승하려고 했던 이태준의 사상이 반영되어 있었다. 특히 이태준의 자전 소설인 <사상의 월야>에는 이와 같은 근대 지향적인 자세와 엘리트 의식이 잘 반영되어 있다. 본 연구는 이와 같은 과정을 통해서 이태준이라는 한 작가의 내면세계가 당대의 어떤 지식체계와 관련을 맺고 있는지를 밝히고자 하였다.
This study looked into the characteristic of Yi, Tae Jun's attitude in language. It was related with the thought of the ideologies of modern intellectuals who lived in civilized period of korea and the characteristic of traditional Korea society of general intellectuals. Yi, Tae Jun was the writer to think the problem of the language very important like the thing to be known well. But the thing which he thought so that he was important was especially the written language. He was believing the character and object that is same. The intellectuals of traditional Korea thought the written language important. And Yi, Tae Jun success such traditions. The thought which Yi, Tae Jun has to be like the this made him have the elitism. Therefore Yi, Tae Jun evaluated the people to the object of the education It was the reflection of the thought of The people to succeed the thought of the ideologies of modern intellectuals who lived in civilized period of Korea.
