최일남 소설 '아주 느린 시간'의 노년 '엿보기' 고찰

최일남의 소설 ‘아주느린 시간’은 노년기의 인물들을 다루고 있다. 노년기에 대해 사회적으로 합의된 것은 없지만 이 소설에서는 현직에서 은퇴한 인물들을 노년으로 다룬다. 노년은 ‘삶의 비행을 마친’ 시기로서 생의 ‘끝내기’를 놓고 고심하는 시기가 아닌가 서술자는 궁금해 한다.이 소설은 당산이라는 신도시에서 살고 있는 다섯 노인의 이야기를 에피소드 식으로 담은 이야기이다. 노인들은 ‘높은 연금등이 암시하는 상당한 이력의 소유자’들이다. 그래서 노인이지만 가난하거나 궁상맞지 않다. 유명 메이커의 옷으로 세련되게 외양을 꾸미고 여유있게 살아가는 사람들이다. 그런 외양처럼 마음도 여유가 있는지, 노년이라는 특성과 관련해서 서술자는 그들의 일상과 마음이 궁금하다고 한다. 노년은 생의 '끝내기'에 해당하는 시기라고 생각하기 때문이다. 그래서 서술자는 이 노인들의 일상을 엿보기로 했다고 밝힌다. 그래서 소설은 서술자가 엿본 사실을 보고하는 형식을 띠게 된다. 엿본 노인들의 일상은 물론 죽음을 앞에 놓고 살기 때문에 과거에 대한 정리나, 죽음 자체를 의식하기는 하지만 다른 세대의 사람들과 다를 것이 없다. 노인들은 죽음을 앞에 두고 있는 사람을 두고도 돈을 빌리기도 하고, 과거의 문제를 털어버리고 싶어하지만 그게 감정의 사치에 가까울 뿐이라는 사실을 깨닫기도 한다.서술자의 엿보기는 그래서 결국 노인들의 삶도 사람살이일 뿐이라는 사실을 전해준다.

The aim of this study is on the old people in “Very Slow Passing-Time” written by Choi, Ihl-nam. Old people here means the retired ones, even though we do not have this kind of concept recognized socially. The “Old Age” is that someone is in his or her declining years. The author thinks that this age should become the hard time for the ‘ending life well’ after ending the flying of life. This work shows five old men's stories in Dangsan. The readers can guess that they belonged to the high class when they were young because they get the high pension now. And thus they are not poor. They wear the famous-brand clothing and keep their appearances nice and live well. The author wonders that they can have the peaceful mentality like their appearances because they are in their declining years. So he makes his mind that he describes their common deeds in everyday lives. As a result his work looks like a report. Their lives are the same like the others' ones, even though they think about the death sometimes, and arrange the past. For example, one of them borrows some money from a dying man or would like to solve the past problems. But soon he understands that this is impossible except a kind of emotional aspect. As a conclusion, the author says that the lives in the declining years are the same like ones of the ordinary people.
