‘여러’의 어원

Origin of ‘Yeoreo’

‘여러’는 흔히 ‘많은, 많은 수효’라는 뜻으로 사용되고 있다. 그러나 ‘여러’의 어원을 따져 보면 ‘열(十) 남짓 되는’이라는 의미를 가지고 있는 것을 알 수 있다. 즉 ‘열(十)’과 ‘어’의 결합으로 이루어진 단어이다. 이때 ‘어’의 의미는 ‘수효나 어떤 사실이 분명하지 못할’ 때 사용하는 형태로 이것은 ‘두어’라는 말을 보아서도 알 수 있다. ‘두어’는 ‘둘쯤 되는 수’를 일컫는 말이다. 따라서 ‘열어’의 ‘어’는 바로 ‘두어’와 같은 ‘어’인 것이다.그래서 ‘열어’는 ‘열 개쯤 되는 수’를 가리키는 것이었는데 후에 ‘많은’과 의미가 구분되지 않고 사용된 듯하다. ‘넷이나 다섯 가량’을 의미하는 ‘너더댓’의 ‘너덧’도 ‘??(넛)’에 ‘어’가 결합된 형태로 볼 수 있을 것이다.[??(넛)+어)→너더]

Generally we use 'yeoreo' to mean 'many'. But the origin of 'yeoreo' is 'about ten(10)‘. 'Yeoreo' is a compound word of 'yeol(10)' and 'eo'. The meaning of 'eo' is 'that the number or some fact is not clear'. So 'eo''s meaning of 'yeoreo' is same that of 'eo' of 'dueo(about two)'. Thus, it seems that 'yeoreo' originally meant 'about ten', and it came to have the meaning of 'many' later. In the same way, 'neodeodat', which means 'about four or five', has a compound 'neodeot' that 'neot(4)' is combined with 'eo(t)'
