신라 향가의 시적 성격

The Nature of Hang-ga written in the period, Silla

이 글은 향가에 관한, 특히 『삼국유사』 소재 신라 향가에 관한 연구가 지나치게 역사적, 혹은 사상적 맥락에서 수행되어 왔다는 비판에서 출발하여, 향가 자체의 성격을 보다 객관적으로 해명하고자 이를 밝히는 구체적인 연구 방법으로 시에서 화자와 청자의 문제에 주목하였다. 이러한 연구 방법을 중심으로 신라 향가를 분석한 결과, 화자와 청자가 다수, 즉 집단이냐 개인이냐에 따라 ‘집단 화자, 집단 청자’, ‘개인 화자, 집단 청자’, ‘개인 화자, 개인 청자’의 세 가지 유형이 있음을 알 수 있었다. 유형 분류를 중심으로 간략하게 그 성격에 접근하면, ‘집단 화자, 집단 청자’의 경우는 민요적 성격이 두드러졌고, ‘개인 화자, 집단 청자’의 경우는 의도성, 혹은 목적성이 두드러짐을 알 수 있었다. ‘개인 화자, 개인 청자’의 경우 개인의 퍼소나가 시적 의미 형성에 이바지한다고 보아, 화자와 청자가 드러나느냐 그렇지 않으냐에 따라 다시 세 유형으로 나누었다. 이 중 ‘드러나지 않은 화자, 드러난 청자’의 경우는 청자 지향이 되므로, 명령, 요청, 권고의 성격이 강했고, ‘드러난 화자, 드러난 청자’의 경우 청자를 상대로 대화하는 형식 속에 청자에 대한 소망, 탄원, 요청을 노래한 경우가 많았으며, ‘드러난 화자, 드러나지 않은 청자’의 경우 독백적 성격이 강했다. 한편, 같은 맥락에서 ‘드러나지 않은 화자, 드러난 청자’는 ‘개인 화자, 집단 청자’의 경우와 마찬가지로 의도성과 목적성을 지닌 경우가 많음을, 나머지 두 항목의 경우는 서정성이 부각됨을 확인하였다. 특히 ‘드러난 화자, 드러나지 않은 청자’에서 엿들어지는 독백이라는 서정시 본연의 성격이 잘 드러남을 밝힌 바 있다. 이로써 화자의 퍼소나가 드러나는 것이 서정적 의미 형성에 매우 중요한 역할을 한다는 것이 증명되었고, 분석에 의거하여 신라 향가는 일단, 내용상 민요적 성격을 지닌 것, 목적적 혹은 교훈적 성격을 지닌 것, 서정적인 것의 세 가지 갈래가 있다고 보았다.

This study was started from my severe criticism that the general studies about Hang-ga written in the period, Shilla, had been accumulated only historical and ideological view-point. On this study, I watched the problem the teller and the listener on each poetry. On the focus of the teller and the listener on poetry, I had analyzed Hang-ga. As a result, we have seen that it was divided three patterns. The first type is ‘the mass teller and the mass listener’, the second is ‘the personal teller and the mass lister’, and the third is ‘the personal teller and the personal listener’. If we would approached the nature of Hang-ga on the focus the teller and the listener on poetry, on the case of ‘the mass teller and the mass listener’ was revealed the property of a fork song. On the case of ‘the personal teller and the mass listener’ was revealed the nature of intention strongly. On the case ‘the personal teller and the personal listener’, I had divided three patterns too according from the teller and the listener is revealed or not. The case of ‘the hiding teller and the revealing listener’ has the nature of order, request and advice strongly. The case of ‘the revealing teller and the revealing listener’ was showed the nature of desire, petition and advice for the listener. The last case of ‘the revealing teller and the hiding listener’ was showed the nature of monologue. Specially, I make clear the last case has strong nature of the sentimental and emotional feelings in the description of emotional poetry. On the above study, we have seen Hang-ga has three nature. They are the thing near the fork song, the thing to have propensity of intention and instruction, and the thing to have the propensity of emotion.
