급속한 다문화 사회로의 진행을 보이고 있는 한국 사회에서 실제적인 다문화 교육의 필요성과 개선 방향을 제안하기 위한 연구에 목적이 있다. 먼저 다문화 교육의 개념과 다문화 교육의 현황을 살피고, 초등 국어 교과서의 다문화적 요소를 단원 구성, 소재 및 주제, 작가, 삽화 등의 항목으로 나누어 미국 교과서와의 비교를 통해 분석하였다. 분석을 바탕으로 하여 향후 교과서 개정 시에 반영되었으면 하는 다문화 교육적 요소의 반영 방향에 대해 제안하였다. 다문화 사회로의 진입은 한국 사회에서 이미 진행되고 있는 변화 현상이다. 이를 해결해야 할 문제나 극복해야 할 과제로 안으려 하지 말고, 한국 사회가 건강하게 성장할 수 있는 자양분으로 인식한다면, 미래 사회에 대한 적극적 대비는 물론 한국 사회의 다양성 제고에 바탕이 될 것이다. 한국이 다문화 사회로 가고 있다는 사실을 인지하고 긍정적 가치로 받아들일 수 있도록 교육이 담당해야 할 방향은 분명해 보인다. 그 교육이 가고자 하는 방향을 위해 교과서가 어떤 역할을 담당해야 할 것인지 또한 분명하게 보이므로, 교육의 기초가 되는 교과서의 개선 작업에 작은 일조라도 하고 싶은 마음으로 진행한 연구이다.
This is a study to propose the necessity of multi-cultural education and its direction for improvement in Korean society as we proceed to a multi-cultural one rapidly. First, I have researched the concept and reality of multi-cultural education in Korea and analysized them by comparison with the US textbooks in the categories of chapter construction, content and theme, editorial staff, and illustration. Based on this, I have made proposals for the direction of multi-cultural education for the revision of textbook in the future. Entering a multi-cultural society is an ongoing phenomenon in Korea. It will the active preparation for the future and diversity in Korean society if we take it as a benefactor for healthy development, not as a barrier to overcome or a problem to solve. It is obvious what education has to do for the society to take this phenomenon in grant and appreciate its positive value. It is also very clear what the role of textbook to show the direction for education. The aim of my study is to help improvement of textbook as a the foundation of education.
