외래어의 자생적 기능에 관한 고찰

A consideration of the autogenetic function of loanwords

90년대 이후의 국어 순화는 그 목표를 순수성 유지에서 의사소통의 효율성을 높이려는 방향으로 맞추고 있다. 하지만 순화의 실제는 고유어ㆍ한자어ㆍ외래어 등을 총동원하여 혼란스런 모습을 보이고 있고, 다듬은 말의 정착도는 매우 낮은 형편이다. 외래어 정책은 언어 현실에 바탕을 두고 진행되어야 하며, 외래어 사용을 '국어 표현의 다양화'라는 긍정적 측면에서 재인식해야 한다. 곧 외래어의 적절한 사용 맥락을 교육하여 효과적인 의사소통을 할 수 있도록 이끄는 것이 필요하다는 것이다. 이런 점에서, 지속적으로 확대ㆍ재생산되고 있는 외래어의 자생적인 기능을 언어학적으로 살펴볼 필요가 있다. 먼저 소위 ‘한제 외래어’의 자생적 기능을, ① 합성어를 만드는 경우 ② 파생어를 만드는 경우 ③ 혼성어를 만드는 경우 ④ 원어의 의미와 달라진 경우 등으로 나누어 살필 수 있다. 또한 외래어나 외래어 요소가 어휘 내부로 끼어들거나 어휘 생성의 한 부분으로 기능하는 양상에 초점을 맞추어, ① 혼종어를 만드는 경우 ② 외래어가 단순어근화한 경우 ③ 외래어 요소가 어근형성 접미사로 쓰인 경우 등으로 나누어 살필 수 있다. 외래어가 사용되어 다양한 유형의 신조어가 생산적으로 만들어지고 있다는 점, 외래어나 외래어 요소이긴 하지만 이미 몇몇은 우리의 국어와 같은 특성을 보이거나 국어 문법 체계 내부로 들어와 있다는 점, 일부 한제 외래어들은 우리의 지식체계와 맞물리는 국어 어휘로 인정받을 수도 있다는 점 등이 특징적이다.

The loanword-policy should be executed being based on the linguistic reality and using the loanwords shoud be looked on the bright side, that is, the variety of linguistic expression. In this context, the autogenetic function of loanwords needs to be considered linguistically. First, it is possible to consider the autogenetic function of 'Korean make loanwords, alias Konglish' dividing it like this ; ① the compound words ② the derivative words ③ the blending ④ the case of being differentiated from the original word meaning. Also, it is possible to consider the autogenetic function of the loanword-constituent dividing it like this ; ① the hybrid words ② a loanword is being used as simple roots ③ a loanword-constituent is being used as root-forming suffixes. It is characteristic that the neologism of varied types is being made productively, and some 'Korean make loanwords' can be accepted as Korean vocabulary in connection with our knowledge system.
