『백구』의 인물 연구

A Study On Character In Yom Sang Sub's Novel, <A White Dove>

이 연구는 기존의 수많은 염상섭 연구에서 상대적으로 소외된 『백구』의 인물분석을 통하여 『삼대』, 『무화과』, 『백구』의 연속성의 증거를 찾아 제시하고 이 작품이 갖는 인물의 의미와 특성을 천착하였다. 『백구』는 당시의 검열을 의식한 작가의 고민과 의도된 문학적 장치들이 인물성격화에 집중적으로 형상화되었음을 밝혔다. 동정자와 주의자들의 연관성을 『사랑과 죄』에서부터 그 맥락을 살펴보면 이 작품의 의미가 드러난다. 동정자는 일제의 탄압에 의해 그 의식이 변모되고 주의자는 그 활동에 제약을 받는 인물로서, 국내에서 지지 기반을 점점 잃어 가는 지하 항일 운동가들은 자신들과의 연결점이 점점 없어져 가는 동정자들과의 관계성을 모색해야만 했다. 동정자들의 경제적 인격적 파탄과 검거되는 주의자들의 구금 현실로 말미암아 주의자들의 투쟁은 철저한 위장과 비밀 조직이 필요하게 되었다. 『백구』의 세계가 그런 양상을 정확하게 그리고 있다고 평가할 수 있다. 『사랑과 죄』, 『 삼대』, 『무화과』 그리고 『백구』로 이어지면서 인물에 나타난 항일의 형상화는 점점 미약해졌다. 『백구』에 오면 지하 항일단체는 갱단으로 호도되기에 이른다. 그것은 동정자의 부재와 주의자의 위장이라는 작가의 당대인식이 작중인물의 성격으로 형상화된 것이다.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the character of Yom, Sang Sub' novel ;『A white Dove』. Yom, Sang Sub was the realistic novelist whose resistance against the Japanese colonial rule was realized in his fiction. And his rebellious spirit reaches the very summit in his four novels like <Love And Crime(사랑과 죄)1926>, <Three Generation(삼대), 1931)>, <The Fig Tree(무화과)1932>, < A White Dove(백구) 1933>. But A White Dove(『백구』) is not regarded as a important novel. So the results of analyzing character of the text can be verified the hypothesis which <A White Dove> is not only the important work but also one of series novel succeeding to <Three Generation)> and <The Fig Tree>. The narrative fiction should have a structure and an various aesthetic element. It must, of course, stand in recognizable relation to life. Such novelist as Yom Sang Sub offers less a relation than a world. in its entirety. Especially Yom, Sang Sub has such a way to create the world which is recognizable as overlapping the empirical world but distinct in it's self-coherent intelligibility. I examined Yom Sang Sub' understanding about the character. So called the sympathizer and the socialist, they are the one of most important characters. I scrutinized such organizing elements of Yom's fiction as characters Chapter tow is a discussion about so-called Sympathizer. In this chapter I considers the relation between sympathizer and socialist as one of the most important problems in Yom's novels, <A White Dove>. For the first time in this contemporary Korean novels, Yom created sympathizers who aid his socialist secretly. But as a matter of fact, in the novels, sympathizer's role does not accord to his original intention. so he cannot help evade a self-contradiction as the fellow-traveller novelist. Of course, we can discern in such sympathizers ironic process which also strengthens novelistic realism. In conclusion, I empathized that <A White Dove> is not only the significant novel of Yom Sang Sub as novelist, but also his characteristic technical device which is indispensable for his realism.
