ESP 교양 영어 교과목 개발을 위한 기초연구

A Basic Research for ESP Curriculum Development in General English Class: Based on Interest and Expectation of English by College Students Majoring in Physical Education at C University in Gangwon Province

본 연구는 체육대학 학습자들을 위한 ESP 교양영어 교과목 개발에 앞선 기초연구로 영어학습자들의 영어에 대한 관심과 기대에 대해 알아보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 강원도 C 대학 체육대학 학습자를 대상으로 하였다. 연구참여자는 양적연구 33명이고, 질적연구는 6명이다. 수집된 자료는 빈도분석과 질적연구 방법으로 분석하였다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 연구참여자들은 영어학습의 중요성에 대한 인식은 높은 반면, 영어학습에 대한 선호도는 낮게 나타났다. 둘째, 연구참여자들은 자신들의 영어 실력에 대해 저평가하였고, 영어 말하기와 쓰기 능력이 취약하다고 인식하였다. 셋째, 연구참여자들은 평소 영어학습을 하고 있지 않았고, 영어의 필요성을 취업에 두고 있었다. 넷째, 영어 수업이 취업과 영어 실력 향상을 가져올 것이라는 높은 기대감을 가지고 있었다. 다섯째, 영어수업에서 다룰 내용으로 듣기와 말하기를 요구하고 있었다.

This study aims to analyze the interests and expectation of EFL learners majoring in sports prior to developing ESP General English curriculum. For this purpose, participants are the students of college of sports at C university of Gangwon-do. The participants were 33 in the quantitative research method and 6 in the qualitative one. The data were collected and analyzed with descriptive statistics and in-depth interview. The results are as follows. 1) the recognition of the importance of English learning was high, but the preference for English learning was low. 2) participants underestimated their English ability and perceived their English speaking and writing skills to be weak. 3) English learning was not usually done, and the necessity of English was placed on employment. 4) they had high expectation that English classes would bring employment and improvement of English skills. 5) listening and speaking were requested as content to be covered in English class.
