이 글은 Sway:Unravelling Unconscious Bias의 번역서 인 『편견의 이유』(프라기야 아가왈, 이재경 옮김, 2022)를 한국의 리터 러시 연구자들에게 소개하고 자 시도되었다. 이를 위해 ‘명시적 편향’과 ‘암묵적 편향’을 구별하고, 이 책이 주로 ‘암묵적 편향’을 주로 다룬 이유를 밝혔으며, 이후 구체적인 사례들로써 이러한 편향이 왜 생기는 지, 어떤 모습으로 나타나는 지, 왜 문제가 되는 지 등을 보였다. 편향이 내면화되는 이유, 양상과 더불어 현대 기술에서의 편향까지, 우리가 경험하고 있는 편향의 거의 모든 측면을 다룬 것이다. 저자가 말한 바와 같이 “편견에서 벗어날 유일한 방법은 편견의 메커니즘을 이해하는 것뿐”이므로 이 글은 저자가 밝혀낸 편견의 근원과 양상을 충실히 보이는 데 의미를 두었다. 또한 이 책은 영국에 사는 저자의 삶을 배경으로 하므로 유사한 한국 사례나 도서 등도 소개함으로써 한국 사회 편견의 양상도 함께 풀어 보이고자 하였다.

This article introduces Reasons of Prejudice (Pragya Agarwal, translated by Lee Jae-kyung, 2022), a translation of Sway: Unraveling Unconscious Bias, to Korean literacy researchers. To this end, the concepts of ‘explicit bias’ and ‘implicit bias’ are distinguished, and the reason why this book mainly deals with with the latter is explained. Furthermore, why this bias occurs, how it is manifested, and why it is problematic are illustrated with specific examples. The book covers almost every aspect of the bias we experience, including why and how bias is internalized, as well as bias in modern technology. As “the only way to escape from prejudice is to understand the mechanism of it,” according to the author, this article aims to faithfully relate the causes and manifestations of prejudice identified by the author. In addition, since this book draws upon the experiences of an author who resides in England, I adduced similar Korean cases and books to explain the aspects of prejudice in Korean society.
