The Philosophical Role of Tourism in Realization of the Northeast Asia Peace Community

Recently, the Northeast Asia, which includes China, Japan and Korea, has become one of the top three regions for trade and, therefore, is being recognized as a key hub for the global economy. Meanwhile, tourism not only improves the economy, but also enhances mutual understanding through interchange and implied cultural functions. Connected to this development, the promotion of the tourism industry will foster South Korea’s positioning in the Northeast Asian economy, greatly supporting the nation’s future progress. Taking the above into consideration, there is a need to carefully scrutinize the roles of tourism in Northeast Asia for the management of the future of Korea. The research objective of the paper is to look for the roles of tourism to realize a ‘Northeast Asia Peace Community’, and to promote the world peace and integration. It is urgent that the current Korean government should change its strategic position toward North from a hawkish approach to a more engagement- oriented one dealing with both cooperation issue and nuclear issue at the same time.
