“The Angel of Entertainments”: Caravan’s Writing

본고는 이상의 일문 ｢조감도(鳥瞰圖)｣ 계열시 가운데 ｢2인(二人)……1……｣, ｢2인……2……｣, ｢흥행물천사(興行物天使)｣에 주목하여, 그가 ‘모조(模造)’ 기독과 ‘속화(俗化)’ 성전의 틈바구니에서 참된 그리스도의 도래를 기도하고 있었다는 사실을 해명하고자 했다. ｢2인……｣에서 그는 현재의 교회가 성전의 외양을 하고 있지만 ‘모조’ 성전이라고 쓴다. 알 카포네가 입장권을 팔고 있는 ‘네온싸인으로장식된어느교회’는 ‘힌뼁끼로칠한십자가’를 첨탑 위에 꽂은 자본의 성전에 불과한 것이다. ｢흥행물천사｣에도 ‘2인’의 천사가 등장한다. 알 카포네가 기독을 이용해서 돈벌이를 했던 것처럼, 가짜 천사는 뱀과 같은 회초리로 천사를 겁박하고 천사를 흥행물로 전락시킨다. 이처럼 이상은 근대 자본주의의 도래 이후 극도로 세속화된 교회에 대해, 가짜 기독과 가짜 천사의 왕국에 대해 쓰고 있었다. 그가 세상을 떠난 뒤 김기림이 썼던 것처럼 이상은 세상에서 쓰는 화폐와는 다른 종류의 화폐를 쌓으려 했던, 십자가를 걸머진 ‘골고다’의 시인이었다. 그런 이유에서 이상은 자신이 타락한 세계―자본주의라는 맘몬의 체제 속에서 참된 그리스도의 도래를 기도하는 ‘카라반’임을 자처하고 있었던 것이다.

This study aims to examine the meaning of the poetic words with religious connotations in Yi Sang’s Bird’s Eye View (鳥瞰圖), a series of Japanese poems that includes “Two People (二人)……1……,” “Two People (二人)……2……,” and “The Angel of Entertainments” (興行物天使). Through these works, I examine how Yi Sang prays for the coming of the true Christ while observing the counterfeit Christ and the secularized church. Yi Sang used Christian motifs in many of his works and had a desire to destroy the fake Christ as he awaited the true one. In “Two People (二人)……,” Yi Sang writes that the contemporary church has nothing to do with the gospel, despite having the appearance of a temple. The church lavishly decorated with neon signs where Al Capone sold tickets was nothing more than a capitalist temple. In “The Angel of Entertainments” (興行物天使), a fake angel whips and intimidates an emaciated real angel, making it a mere spectacle. Therefore, in the modern capitalist world, as observed by Yi Sang, there were extremely secularized, counterfeit versions of the Christian church, fake Christs, and fake angels. Yi Sang sees himself as a poet of Golgotha who walked with a cross. For that reason, he claims to be a caravan, praying for the coming of the true Christ in the corrupt system of capitalism rules by Mammon.
