조선시대 이순신 용모 및 초상화 관련 기록 검토

A Review of the Records of Yi Sun-sin's Appearance and Portraits during the Chosun Dynasty Era

오랫동안 이순신 초상화는 관심을 받지 못했다. 이순신이 생전에 초상화를 그렸다는 기록이 없고, 또 생전의 초상화도 현존하지 않는다. 게다가 1598년 11월 19일 전사했기 때문에 사후에 초상화가 그려졌다고 보지도 않았다. 또한 1604년 선무공신 책훈 이후에도 이순신이 이미 사망했기에 초상화가 그려지지 않았을 것이라고 보고 있었다. 이 논문은 생전 혹은 사후 얼마 동안에 그려진 초상화의 존재 여부가 아니다. 사후 언젠가 그려진 이순신 초상화에 대한 것이다. 기존에는 그와 관련한 연구 혹은 검토가 거의 없었다. 이 논문에서는 각종 문헌 기록을 통해 이순신 사후 어떤 시점부터 이순신과 관련된 곳에서 각각 이순신 초상화가 그려졌고, 그 초상화들이 전래되었다는 것을 밝혔다. 초상화의 바탕이 되는 이순신 용모 기록도 그동안 언급되지 않았던 곽열(郭說, 1548∼1630)이 남긴 기록도 처음 소개했다.

For a long time, the portrait of Admiral Yi Sun-sin was not given much attention. There is no record of a portrait of him being painted while he was alive, and no portrait of him exists from his lifetime. Moreover, after his death in battle on November 19, 1598, it was not believed that his portrait would be painted posthumously. It was thought that even after the dedication of Seonmu-gongsin in 1604, it would not have been painted because Yi Sun-sin had already died. This paper does not focus on the existence of portraits painted during life or after death, but rather on a portrait of Yi Sun-sin painted after his death. Previously, there have been few studies or reviews related to the portrait of Yi Sun-sin. Through research of various literature records, this paper reveals that portraits of Yi Sun-sin were drawn at certain times and places after his death and have been handed down. The record of Yi Sun-sin's appearance, the basis of the portrait, mentioned by Kwak Yeol (1548-1630), who has not been studied, is also introduced for the first time.
