옛날이나 지금이나 외국에서 공부한다는 것은 어려운 일이었다. 쉽지 않은 일이지만 사람들은 기회만 있으면 留學 가기를 원했다. 일제시기 많은 사람들은일본에 유학 가기를 바랐다. 1945년 8월 15일 한국에 새로운 권력 집단이 출현했다. 그것은 미국을 대표하는 주한미군이었다. 주한미군의 등장은 미국유학 붐을낳았다. 학생들은 너나 할 것 없이 영어공부를 하면서 유학을 꿈꿨다. 하지만 이당시 미국유학은 하늘의 별따기만큼 어려웠다. 학생들이 미국유학을 가기 위해서는 입학허가증과 비자를 받아야만 했다. 이는 조력자 없이는 불가능한 일이었다. 이 당시 조력자는 주한미군과 선교사였다. 이들은 미국유학을 희망하는 학생들에게 입학허가증과 달러를 얻어주었으며, 스스로 보증인이 되었다. 1947~1948년 미국에 유학 간 절대다수 학생은 사적자금을 받았다. 미군정 요원들은 공적자금으로 미국에 학생들을 파견하기 위해 노력했지만, 실패하고 말았다. 교회나 선교단체는 가장 많은 장학금을 제공한 곳이었다. 그 결과 미국유학생 가운데 적지않은 사람들은 신학과 같은 비전공학문 분야를 전공으로 택할 수밖에 없었다. 이 당시 미국유학을 갔던 사람들 가운데 한국에돌아온 사람들은 그렇지 못한 사람보다 나은 삶을 살아갔으며, 전공한 분야에서막대한 영향력을 발휘하는 인물이 되었다. 즉, 이들은 분단과 변혁의 시·공간에서미국유학이라는 별의 순간을 잡았던 것이다.

It was difficult to study abroad in the past and now. It is not easy, if people had chance, they wanted to go study abroad. During the Japanese occupation, many Korean students wanted to study in Japan. On August 15, 1945, a new power group emerged in Korea. It was thed USAFIK representing the United States. The emergence of US forces in Korea gave birth to a boom in studying in the U.S. Students, without exception, dreamed of studying abroad while studying English. However, studying in the United States was as difficult as picking a star at that time. In order for Korean students to study in the United States, they had to obtain an admission permit and visa. This mission would not have been possible without a supporters. At that time, the supporters were U.S. Forces in Korea and missionaries. They obtained admissions permits and dollars to students wishing to study in the United States. The supporters themselves became guarantors. The vast majority of students who went to study in the United States received private funds during 1947~1948. USAMGIK’s agents tried to send students to the United States with public funds, but failed. As a result, many of Korean students in the United States had no choice but to choose a non-engineering field such as theology as their major. Among those who studied in the United States at that time, those who returned to Korea lived a better life than those who did not. They became influential figures in their field of study. In other words, they captured the star’s moment called studying in the United States in the time and space of division and transformation.
