An Analysis of Palkwanhoe’s Characteristics and Its Implications on the Tourist Festival

This article studies the characteristics and the transformation process of Parlkwonhoe, a national festival of the Koryeo Dynasty, to determine the factors that maintain or threaten the festival. Palkwanhoe was borne of many spiritual cults, adapting to the people’s epidemic belief system around the country. The ceremony consists of many parts: the worship cult, entertainment, exchange, and communication. These are the factors that sustain the festival. Palkwanhoe played a key role as a governmental instrument to establish social integration, achieve legitimacy, and determine its implications in the cultural tourism policy, which relates the ceremonial life-world and the development of traditional Korean festivals inherited from the cultural river of the Korean people.
