역사인물자원으로서 김만일의 생애와 헌마 업적 연구

A Study on the Life and the Achievement of Contributing Horses of Kim Man-il as a Historical Character Resource

이 글은 사료분석을 통한 김만일(1550-1632)의 생애와 헌마 업적을 종합하기 위한 내용이다. 김만일은 제주인으로서 조선시대 전마를 나라에 헌마함으로써 국난극복에 공헌했으며, 국방과 외교에도 기여했다. 또한 우리나라 마정사 및 마문화 발달은 물론, 일상생활에 이르기까지 영향을 끼쳤던 역사인물이다. 그는 헌마의 공로로 고위 관직을 제수받았을 뿐만 아니라, 조선시대 유일한 헌마공신이 되었고, 높은 벼슬에 올라 사회·경제적 지위를 성취하였다고 평가할 수 있다. 이러한 그의 행적은 주로 『조선왕조실록』 등 관찬 사료는 물론, 사찬 사료에도 산재해 전하고 있다. 인물의 생애와 업적에 관한 연구는 지역문화의 원형 자료를 마련할 수 있다는 점에서 그 의의가 크다. 이에, 김만일에 관한 가치 있는 사료에 우선 주목하고, 이를 체계적으로 분석하고 정리하는 데 연구의 주안점을 두었다. 또한 사료분석을 하면서 그 내용을 기록하게 된 이유나 배경 등을 조선의 정세와 시대적 상황에 비추어 비판적으로 검토하였다. 역사에 큰 족적을 남겼음에도 일반인에게 잘 알려지지 않은 김만일이 앞으로 제주의 역사인물자원으로 다양하게 활용되었으면 하는 바람을 담는다.

This article is intended to synthesize the life and the achievement of contributing Horses Kim Man-il(1550-1632) through the analysis of historical materials. Kim Man-il contributed to overcoming the national crisis by donating war horses during the Joseon Dynasty, and also contributed to national defense and diplomacy. In addition, he is a historical figure who influenced not only the development of horse history and horse culture in Korea but also daily life. It can be evaluated that he was not only awarded a high-ranking government post for donating war horses but also achieved social and economic status by climbing to a high government post. Therefore, the focus of the research was on systematically analyzing and organizing valuable historical data about Kim Man-il. In addition, the reasons and backgrounds for recording the contents during historical analysis were critically reviewed in light of the situation and times of Joseon.
