Topic Modeling of Conflict Reports in National Daily Newspapers

이 연구는 국내 주요 전국일간지를 대상으로 갈등 보도의 주제와 특성을 분석하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 통해 언론보도가 갈등의 순기능과 역기능 중 어떠한 측면에 중점을 두고 있는지를 파악하고자 한다. 구체적으로, 2010년부터 2022년까지 주요 전국일간지에 보도된 갈등 관련 기사를 토픽모델링 방법을 활용해 분석했다. 분석 결과, 정책/외교 갈등, 정부와 지자체 갈등, 국제 무역 갈등, 정치권 갈등 등의 주요 토픽을 도출했다. 갈등 관련 주요 전국일간지 보도는 정부의 대내외적 갈등 상황과 정치권 갈등에 초점을 두고 있었다. 연도별로 특정 갈등 상황을 중심으로 보도하는 특성도 나타났다. 이는 갈등에 대한 언론보도가 사회적 분열과 대립을 양산할 수 있는 갈등의 역기능을 강조하고 있음을 드러낸다. 결론적으로, 이 연구는 갈등을 예방하고 사회 통합을 지향하는 언론의 역할에 대한 고민과 개선 노력이 필요한 시점임을 주지시킨다.

This study aims to examine the subject and characteristics of conflict reports in major national daily newspapers in Korea. This study is intended to understand which aspects of the news media coverage focuses on between the positive function and the negative function of the conflict. Specifically, conflict-related news articles reported in major national daily newspapers from 2010 to 2022 were analyzed using topic modeling. From the results, major topics such as policy/diplomatic conflict, government and local government conflict, international trade conflict, and political conflict were derived. The conflict reports in major national daily newspapers focused on the government's internal and external conflict and political conflict. There was also a characteristic of reporting on specific conflict events by year. This reveals that news reports on conflict emphasize the negative function of conflict that can produce social division and confrontation. In conclusion, this study notes that it is time to consider and improve the role of the news media in preventing conflict and aiming for social integration.
