Needs Analysis of Students for Mongolian Language Education in Korean Universities

There are numbers of important factors such as learners’ learning purpose, goal and motivation that affect language education and Second Language Acquisition (SLA). Though the degree of these factors’ influences may vary depending on every individual, the influences may result in learners’ involvement in the classes and the language achievement. This way of looking for the learners’ goal and needs is called, Needs Analysis (NA). Through NAs, researchers, teachers, or curriculum developers can have a better understanding of the learning targets and design appropriate language courses for them. There are numerous NA researches in English as Second Language (ESL) or English as Foreign Language (EFL). It shows how much English is impactful as a lingua franca and how broadly English is used as the international communication tool. Meanwhile, Mongolian language is a brand-new field among language studies. Moreover, Mongolian language education was not that popular issue, even among the field of Mongolian studies. Currently, there are only two universities in Korea which have majors related to Mongolia. They teach many different subjects of Mongolia including Mongolian language. However, there are not many studies upon Mongolian language education. Thus, the current study aimed to address the needs of NAs and conduct NA survey on Mongolian language learners in the university setting. The result brought out the real needs of learners including the discussion based on the four language skills. Through this NAs of Mongolian language learners, the study attempted to give new insights upon Mongolian language education, become the starting point of the study of Mongolian language learning, provide meaningful implications and suggest further studies.
