Differently Thinking about Burial Data: An Attempt for Transfiguration of Korean Mortuary Archaeology

연구 소재로서 그 위상이나 확장성을 깊이 인식하면서도, 우리 고고학의 분묘자료 활용은 매우제한적이다. 연원을 알 수 없으나 꽤 오랫동안 만연해 있는 몇 가지 관념에 상당 부분 그 책임이 있다고 하겠다. 도그마의 형태로 회자되는 그런 관념은 특정 분묘 양식은 특정 인간집단의 장송‘규범’이 직접적으로 반영된 결과이며, 새로운 분묘 양식의 등장을 이해하기 위해서는 조형집단에서 비롯된 ‘계통’을 좇아야 하며, 결과적으로 분묘자료는 ‘일괄’로 파악되어야 한다는 등의 전제에 기초하고 있다. 거듭된 지적에도 불구하고, 지속되고 있는 그런 관념을 극복하기 위해, 분묘축조라는 행위가 분절적 과정에 따라 이루어지며, 매 단계에는 기술적 선택이 있을 수 있다는 대안을 제안한다. 이런 방법론적 전환이 인식 변화의 토대를 제공하게 된다.

Recognized their current status and future applicability, burial data have been limitedly used in Korean mortuary archaeology. A couple of prevalent dogmata, of which origins are not apparently known, could be attributed to the limitation. The dogmata premise that a specific burial style represents an ethnic group, that the phylogeny of new burial style should be explored, and eventually that burial data should be interpreted as package thing. Overcoming the limited ideas, I propose a methodological alternative that burials are constructed by a series of articulated activities, and that technological choice could exist in each stage of the whole procedure. This methodological shift is likely to spur the changes in theoretical orientation of Korean mortuary archaeology.
