폭력의 식민주의적 기원

The colonial origins of violence: Terrorist Strategy of OAS and ‘Nostalgeria’

한때 알제리에서 살았던 수십만 명의 유럽인들에게 과거의 이상화(idealization)는 우울함이 가득한 ‘알제리 향수(nostalgérie)’로 재현된다. 그러나 비극은 비밀군사조직(OAS)과 그 계승자들만이 그것을 부정직하고 지속해서 도구화했다는 사실로부터 시작된다. 한 공동체 전체를 혼란에 빠뜨리는 데 만족하지 않고, ‘프랑스령 알제리’의 극단론자들은 이후 공동체의 기억을 독점하고자 했다. 본 논문에서는 1961년 초부터 프랑스와 알제리에서 ‘폭력’의 놀라운 소용돌이를 의도적으로 촉발했던 비밀군사조직과 그들이 유발한 비극적인 사건의 뿌리와 역사, 그리고 동시대의 여파에 대해 고찰해 보고자 한다. 잘못된 애국적 이상을 지닌 장교들의 일탈과 파시스트 전투원 및 “역사를 중단”시키고자 했던, 암살자로 변모한 이들을 추적하고자 한다. 그리고 살인자의 광기로 점철된 이 시기의 뜨거운 기억들이 프랑스 사회의 지하에서 어떻게 그리고 왜 여전히 은밀한 방식으로 작동하는지를 살펴보고자 한다.

For hundreds of thousands of Europeans who once lived in Algeria, the idealization of the past is reproduced in melancholic ‘nostalgeria’. But the tragedy begins with the fact that only the OAS and its successors have dishonestly and consistently instrumentalized it. Not content to throw an entire community into chaos, the extremists in ‘French Algeria’ subsequently sought to monopolize the community’s memory. In this paper, I would like to examine the roots, history, and contemporary aftermath of the Secret Armed Organisation that intentionally triggered the amazing vortex of ‘violence’ in France and Algeria since early 1961. We want to track down the deviations of officers with false patriotic ideals, fascist fighters, and those who have turned into assassins who wanted to “block history”. And I want to look at how and why the hot memories of this period, dotted with killer madness, still work in a stealthy way underground in French society.
