‘배달(倍達)’은 1900년대 초반 대종교에서 처음 사용하기 시작하여 대일항쟁기를 거치면서 대종교 지도자와 독립운동가를 중심으로 우리 민족을 지칭하는 보편적인 용어로 사용되었다. 그런데, ‘배달’의 뜻과 유래에 대해서는 두 가지 견해로 나뉘어 있다. 대종교는 ‘배달’이 단군의 성호이자단군조선의 본래 국호였다고 말하고, 환단고기를 신뢰하는 견해들은 ‘배달’은 환웅천왕의 신시배달 즉, 배달국으로 이해하고 있는 것이다. 이와 같이 상반된 견해는 ‘배달’의 뜻과 유래에 대한 구체적인 검토와 연구의 부족 때문으로 생각된다. 본 연구는 대종교에서 언제, 어떤 과정을 거쳐서 단군과 단군조선을 지칭하는 용어로 ‘배달’을 사용하였는지 검토하였다. 이를 통해, 대종교의 삼신일체설이 역사상으로 정립되는 과정에서 환인·환웅·단군을 하나의 위격, 즉, 단군으로 일체시하면서 배달과 단군, 단군조선을 동일시한 것을 확인할 수 있었다.
‘Baedar’ was first used in Dae-jong-gyo in the early 1900s and was used as a universal term to refer to the Korean people, mainly by Dae-jong-gyo leaders and independence activists during the Japanese colonial era. However, the meaning and origin of ‘Baedar’ are divided into two views. Dae-jong-gyo explained that ‘Baedar’ was the holy name of Dan-gun and the original national name of Dan-gun Joseon, and opinions that believe in Hwan-dan-go-gi understand ‘Baedar’ as ‘Shin-shi-bae-dar’ or Baedar nation of King Hwan-woong-cheon-hwang. These conflicting views are thought to be due to the lack of specific review and research on the meaning and origin of ‘Baedar’. This study examined when and through what process the Dae-jong-gyo used 'Baedar' as a term for Dan-gun and Dan-gun Joseon, and through this, it was confirmed that Hwan-in, Hwan-woong, and Dan-gun were united as one, that is, Dan-gun.
