The Influence of Kang Youwei's Calligraphy Viewpoint on the Korean Calligraphy Association in the 20th Century

The early 20th century was a time of great tragedy in Korean history. Fighters for independence of Korea fled to China, which was experiencing such turbulent times as Korea. They were engaged with Chinese reformers. Under the banner of “Daedong”, One of them was Kang Youwei who wrote the book, “Kwangyejussangjeup” that inserted The philosophical argument of transformation in calligraphy aesthetics. Kang Youwei’s calligraphy viewpoint which were known through “Kwangyejussangjeup” is Respecting Epitaph and Change. His calligraphy viewpoint influenced on Korean Calligraphy association in the 20th century. In the latter half of the 20th century when the Korean style of calligraphy was to respect Epitaph, some calligraphy artists influenced on by Kang Youwei’s calligraphy viewpoint appeared in those days. However, the trend of the Korean Calligraphy association was not just copying Chinese calligraphy. They wanted to have their own art soul and express it as a work. Keomyeo Yoo Hee-gang and Yeocho Kim Eung-hyun were the leaders of the 20th century Korean Calligraphy association. We have developed such a combination of external influences and self-awareness
