A Regional and Diachronic Study on English Subject-Verb Inversion

This paper examines whether there are regional differences in the use of Subject-Verb Inversion(SVI) in British and American English. It also investigates diachronic changes of SVI from 1900 to 2019 based on a custom corpus. The corpus consists of newspaper articles and has approximately 300,000 words of English. The results of this study indicate that more cases of SVI were used in British English than in American English. It also revealed that there was a diachronic decline in the use of SVI from 1900 to 2019 in both dialects. The results confirmed that there are different frequencies of SVI in British and American English, as well as diachronic decreases in both dialects. However, due to the lack of preceding research and a small corpus size, further studies are required involving more extensive empirical data.
