A Comprehensive Review of Studies on Corpus-based English Education

Corpus research has greatly influenced English education, providing insightful findings on language usage, natural and authentic language input, and analytic tools for inductive learning. This study reviews studies on corpus-based English education in Korea. For the review, 190 studies were collected and analyzed using key indices: publishing year, research methods, types of corpus application, types of corpora, target learning focus, types of English education, and target population. The analysis revealed the explosive increase in research after 2011. Some trends and patterns of research which had been reported by previous review studies were found as well: lack of the qualitative approach, biased focus on lexical aspects of a language, and uneven distribution between research methods. In addition, a number of studies have examined textbooks and high-stakes tests, which represents the importance of public education and the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) in Korea. The findings are presented with implications for future research and practice.
