근대 도시 상하이에서 재현의 정치

The Politics of Urban Representation in Modern Shanghai

This research investigates the politics of urban representation in Modern Shanghai. Illustrated newspapers, films, commercial pictorials and street names are all the symbolic landscapes which disclose reality of the City. Under this view, this research studies visual descriptions in illustrated pictorial, photography and film, and examines changing of street names in Shanghai. First of all, in the early 20th century, there were two divided worlds; Chinese and Foreigners in Shanghai. These differences of two worlds was reflected in illustrated pictorials. Specially, some landscapes like park, opium den and racecourse shown the domination of western power. Second, in urban representation of modern Shanghai, the 1930s was a crucial period. Even if Shanghai was called 'Paris of the Orient, at the same time, it was a shady place of the poor. These two aspects of the city was represented in some media. Finally, streets in Shanghai had been named and renamed in many times, these reflected changes of dominant systems. Therefore, street names had been competitive symbolic landscape in modern Shanghai.
