Phonetic teaching is the first step in the second language teaching and also is the most important one. How to help the second language learners distinguish the pronunciation and pronounce correctly is a significant task for the language teachers. In recent years, the Chinese pronunciation teaching has made a big progress, but it still has a large room for improvement. There is a lack of refined study of phonetics in teaching activities. And most phonetic textbooks did not describe the pronunciation accurate enough; some Chinese teachers could not explain the phonetic items clearly. Therefore, it’s necessary to improve Chinese teachers' own ability of phonetics, if they want to improve students' pronunciation. Chinese phonetic teaching should seek development and promotion under the background of a refined study of phonetics.
