Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate direct effects of a bedtime routine on preschoolers’ emotion regulation and its indirect effects through sleep problems. Methods: This study involved 250 preschoolers aged 3 to 5 years and their mothers. Mothers completed questionnaires about their children’s bedtime routines, sleep problems, and emotion regulation. Data were analyzed using SPSS and AMOS. Results: First, preschool children typically participated in activities such as brushing their teeth, using the toilet, or taking a bath before bedtime. Second, the consistency, adaptive activities, and reactivity had direct effects on preschoolers’ emotion regulation. Third, the consistency, both adaptive and maladaptive activities, and reactivity indirectly impacted preschoolers’ emotion regulation through sleep problems. Conclusions: This study is significant in its attempt to uncover the prevalence of bedtime routines among preschoolers, as well as to evaluate the impact of these routines and sleep problems on emotion regulation. The results of this study indicate that establishing and maintaining adaptive bedtime routines at home can have a beneficial effect on the formation of healthy sleep habits and the development of emotional regulation in preschool children.
