On Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World by Haruki Murakami: The Unconscious World Created as a Space of a Novel

この研究では村上春樹の最高の傑作と評価されている『世界の終わりとハードボイルド·ワンダーランド』(1985)の分析を通じて人間の無意識の世界と現実世界のどんな關係があるのかについて考察する。この作品は村上春樹という作家にとって重要な意味をもっている。その理由はこの作品で第21回谷崎潤一郎賞を授賞し、それがきっかけとなり、彼の文学性にめぐる異論がすこし収まることで純文学作家として日本文壇に受け入れるようになってからである。 この作品から平行する二つの物語、一人の人間が持つべき影の登場で春樹小説の特徵が見られるようになった。結果的に作家春樹の全体小説の基本構造がこの作品から始まったと言えるだろう。論者は春樹という作家を人間精神から派生した問題を乗り越えるためにいろいろな方法を小説という装置を通じて摸索した作家だと評価する。この作品の中でも心を失った人々が登場する。この作品は主人公自身のこころを取り戻すために葛藤し、決斷する様相が描かれている。だから、この作品の中で二つの世界と二人の主人公たちの行動と心理変化を観察しながら統合する一つの自我を心理学者であるユングの無意識理論で証明する。最終的に春樹の文学世界は人の目で見えない領域である無意識の世界と現実世界の相互関係を初めから最近まで研究し、小説を書いてきた作家であることをあきらかにする。

In this study, I analyse Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World (1985), a literary work considered Haruki Murakami’s masterpiece, to explore the relationship between the people’s unconscious world and the real world. This novel is a significant piece of work for Haruki Murakami, because he was awarded the 23rd Tanizaki Prize and he widely got accepted as a write of the pure literature. This work shows some characteristics of Haruki Murakami’s novels, such as two parallel stories constructed in tandem and a shadow of a human. As a result, it is reasonable to say that the basic structure of his literary work was formed based on this novel. I argue that Haruki Murakami uses novels as a device to explore various methods for overcoming a range of issues deriving from the human mind. In this novel, too, people who lost their mind appear. It describes the ways in which the protagonists try to get back their minds. Therefore, I resort to Jung’s theory of unconsciousness to explain the ‘self’ that behaviourally and psychologically integrates the two worlds and the two protagonists. Through the present study, I reveal that Haruki Murakami has examined the interrelation between the unconscious world invisible to people and the real world and has portrayed it in his novels.
