Comparative Study of Ancient Roman Writings and the Libretto for Feministic Investigation on Two Female Characters in L’ incoronazione di Poppea

클라우디오 몬테베르디의 《포페아의 대관식》에 등장하는 포페아와 옥타비아는 둘 다로마 제국의 5대 황제였던 네로의 부인이었다. 오페라에서 두 여주인공의 캐릭터는 실제보다 추악하게 왜곡되었는데 이것은 이 작품이 완성되고 초연되었던 베니스 공화국의 정치적성향이 반영되었기 때문이다. 본 논문에서는 고대 로마 역사가인 타키투스, 수에토니우스,디오 카시우스의 원전을 살펴보고 여기에 기록된 포페아와 옥타비아의 실제 모습과 오페라속의 모습을 비교 분석하였다.

From the feministic point of view, the current article compares the historical writings by Suetonius, Tacitus, and Cassius Dio with Francesco Busenello’s libretto to show how the dramatic characters of two female protagonists in L’ incoronazione di Poppea (1643), Poppea and Octavia, are intentionally distorted. While revealing the difference between the reality and the characterization,the article has attempted to show an investigation of primary sources in humanities for musicological studies.
