Image Schematic Understanding of Musical Gesture

이 글은 ‘영상도식’이라는 개념을 통해 음악을 제스츄어로서 듣는 경험의 근본적인 토대를 해명할 것을 시도한다. 이를 위해 먼저 영상도식이 무엇인지를 소개하고 음악적 제스츄어가 갖는 특징들을 제시한 후, 이러한 설명을 바탕으로 음악을 제스츄어로서 듣는 경험을 영상도식 개념에 의해 분석한다. 궁극적으로 이 글은 음악에서 제스츄어를 경험하는 것이 가능한 것은 연속적으로 울리는 소리들을 듣는 이가 영상도식을 통해 하나의 의미 있는 덩어리로 지각해 내기 때문이라고 주장한다. 이러한 주장을 바탕으로 이 글은 음악을 제스츄어로서 이해하는 것은 적어도 음악을 전문적인 형식적 어휘들에 의해 이해하는 것만큼 정당할 수 있다는 것을 아울러 주장한다.

This essay aims at elucidating the ultimate foundation of the experience of music as gesture through the concept of ‘image schemata.’ For this purpose, it first presents the definitional characteristics of ‘image schemata,’ and then shows the essential features of musical gesture. Then, it analyzes the gestural experience of music through the concept of ‘image schemata.’ Ultimately, this essay argues that listeners can experience music as gesture, since s/he perceives the sequence of sounds as a meaningful whole through ‘image schemata.’ With this, this essay argues as well that gestural understanding of music at least as valid as the understanding of music in terms of the technical, formal vocabularies.
