호프만(E. T. A. Hoffmann)의 《운디네》는 그의 가장 대표적인 음악작품으로서 당대에대성공을 거두었지만, 지금은 거의 잊혀진 오페라이다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 《운디네》의양식적인 주요 특징을 고찰하여 그 음악사적 의미를 재조명하였다. 그리고 이에 연관하여 호프만이 여러 비평문을 통해 발표한 오페라에 관한 관점을 조망함으로써 국내 학계에 통용되고 있는 기악음악(교향곡)에 방점을 둔 호프만 음악미학을 수정·보완하는 시도를 하였다.
The romantic opera Undine by E. T. A. Hoffmann is his most representative musical workand was a great success at that time even though it has almost been forgotten. This paper reviewsthe historical significance of Undine by studying main features of the opera. Also, by surveying Hoffmann's view of opera according to various criticisms, I tried to readjust the current view ofHoffmann’s musical aesthetics which had an emphasis only on instrumental music (symphony) in Korea.
