This paper examines the plot structure of Caldecott Award-winning books to shed light on the pedagogical implications of using picturebooks in English language teaching. The study selected 25 books from the 53 Caldecott Medal books published between 1970 and 2022 based on impartiality of topics, publication time distribution, genre diversity, and complexity of written language. This study identified 14 elements of picturebook plot, which can be categorized into several major phases. These include the introduction of character and background information, the development of the story’s major event through the characters’ ordeal and recognition, the provision of vital clues leading to a happy ending, and the resolution of the story’s matters. The concluding part of the story indicates the characters’ growth, social status changes, or environmental changes. This plot structure provides a foundation for interpreting and modifying picturebooks to ensure successful English language teaching. It also enables learners to appreciate the location of each picturebook objectively and serves as a reference point for modifying picturebooks to fit the target audience from different educational contexts.
