바이마르 시절 리스트와 이탈리아 오페라 : 그의 열망과 비판

Liszt and Italian Opera during his Weimar Years : Aspirations and Critique

이 글은 리스트의 바이마르 시절에 완성된 이탈리아 오페라에 대한 그의 비평과 편곡을 탐구한다. 바이마르에서 이탈리아 오페라는 열외로 밀려난 상황에서 그 장르에 대한 그의 열망과 비판은 어떤 의미를 갖는가? 작곡가, 지휘자, 해석가로서 그의 위치를 굳히는 과정에서 이탈리아 오페라에 대한 집필과 편곡을 통해 작가, 편곡자로서 그의 대응은 어떤 의의를 갖는가? 그의 초기 에세이 <라 스칼라 에세이>와 <음악과 이탈리아 에세이>와 중기 에세이 모음인 『드라마적조각들』과 함께 베르디 오페라 페러프레이즈 사례를 통해 이 문제들에 대해 고찰하는 것이 필자의 목표이다. 필자는 다음 세 가지에 초점을 맞춘다. 첫째, 그의 초기 <라 스칼라 에세이>와 <음악과 이탈리아 에세이>에서 비판한 이탈리아 오페라의 문제를 분석한다. 그가 지적한 구조의 획일화, 멜로디의 과도한 집중, 비판의식이 결여된 작곡가와 청중에 대한 문제에 주목한다. 둘째, 중기의 글 『드라마적 조각들』을 탐구하며 초기의 문제의식이 지속, 확장된 특성에 집중한다. 결국 그의 비판 이면에는 오페라의 관습과 드라마의 괴리를 예리하게 지적한 그의 통찰력뿐만 아니라 장르의 개혁을 바라는 그의 미래 지향적 사고가 있음을 조명한다. 마지막으로 베르디 오페라 페러프레이즈에서 차용된 주제 선율의 다각적인 구조적 접근을 통해, 또한 선율을 넘어 합창과 오케스트라로 재작업의 범위를 확장하는 편곡의 과정을 통해, 결국은 드라마를 강화하는 그의 차별화된 접근 방식에 주목한다. 이상의 세 가지에 유의하면서 필자는 리스트의 당대 구조적 틀을 거부하는 비판의식과 개혁의지를 조명한다.

Liszt’s aspirations for Italian opera during his tenure as Kapellmeister at the court of Weimar, especially prior to 1855, have received little attention by scholars. Yet his critical writings as well as his paraphrases attest to his endeavors in this direction, although the court and Liszt himself preferred German operas such as Wagner’s to Italian ones. This study investigates the critical and aesthetic views about Italian opera as genre in his Dramaturgische Blätter written in the mid-1850s, which expanded his earlier essays about drama, “La Scala” and “Music and Italy,” and also explores his paraphrases of Verdi’s current operas. Such an examination demonstrates several issues about his perception of both Italian opera and operatic paraphrase as genres, including their structural uniformity, their excessive focus on melody, and composer and audience being uncritical of the conventions. A consideration of these factors provides valuable insights into Liszt’s belief in progress and reform as the way to raise the level of musical culture.
