≪타라르≫에서 ≪악수르≫로

From Tarare to Atar: Transformation of a Franch Opera into an Italian Opera

보마르셰는 모차르트의 오페라 ≪피가로의 결혼≫과 로시니의 오페라 ≪세비야의 이발사≫의대본들의 바탕이 된 극본의 원작자로 주로 알려져 있다. 그러나 그가 처음부터 오페라 대본으로쓴 ≪타라르≫가 있으며, 모차르트의 경쟁자 살리에리가 그 음악을 작곡했다는 사실은 잘 알려져있지 않다. 그러나 이 작품은 몇 가지 점에서 중요한 역사적 의미를 지닌다. 우선 프랑스 대혁명이 시작되기 두 해 전인 1787년 초연된 이 작품은 구체제 말기 프랑스 오페라가 처했던 상황을살펴볼 좋은 기회를 제공한다. 다음으로 초연 후 바로 이탈리아 오페라로 변신하여 빈 궁정 극장에서 공연된 이 작품의 두 판본을 통해 18세기 후반 프랑스 오페라와 이탈리아 오페라의 차이를직접 비교해 볼 수 있다. 마지막으로 프랑스 대혁명 1주년 기념 공연을 위해 5막 마지막에서두 번째 장면에 삽입된 디베르티스망 “타라르의 대관”을 통해 프랑스 오페라가 혁명이라는 거센파도에 어떻게 적응했는지 볼 수 있다. ≪피가로의 결혼≫과 ≪타라르≫는 둘 다 프랑스 대혁명을 앞둔 당시의 신분 차별 문제를 다루고 있지만, 전자가 귀족과 하인의 갈등을 다루었던 반면후자는 왕과 결탁한 성직자가 합세하여 덕스러운 평민 병사를 억압하는 주제를 다루고 있어 당시의 세 신분 사이의 역학 관계를 고찰할 수 있는 기회를 제공한다.

Beaumarchais is known primarily as the author of original plays such as Barber of Seville and Marriage of Figaro which served as bases for the libretti of Rossini’s and Mozart’s operas. But his only original opera libretto entitled Tarare is almost forgotten nowadays. Composed by Salieri, a supposed rival of Mozart, Tarare is historically significant in several ways: premiered just two years before the French Revolution, this work provides excellent chance to glance at the state of French opera at the end of Ancien Régime. Since it was at once transformed into an Italian opera for Viennese court theater, different intrinsic requirement of the French and the Italian opera can be discernible by comparing two versions. Finally, the interpolation of the divertissement “The Coronation of Tarare” at the penultimate scene of the last act gives a rare chance to see the reflection of French Revolution in opera. Compared to Marriage of Figaro which concentrated on the conflict between the noble and his servant, the conflict of Tarare is focused on the jealousy of a king, supported a priest, against a virtuous soldier Tarare.
