The Holy Spirit and Prayers in Public Worship: A Proposal for Restoring Reformed Worship

예배 회복을 위한 신학적 접근과 목회적 대안 제시를 위해 모든 공동체를 위한 하나의 일반적인 모델을 마련하는 것이 어렵다. 오히려 예배 회복의 제안은 신학과 전통 그리고 예배 공동체가 처한 문화적 상황에 따라 서로 다르게 주어진다. 본 연구는 개혁주의 신학에 기반을 두고 오늘날 팬데믹에 의해 영향을 받은 한국의 개혁교회 공동예배 실천이 어떻게 ‘개혁되고 또 계속해서 개혁되는’(reformed and always reforming) 과정으로 회복할 수 있을지를 제안한다. 이를 위해서 본 연구는 개혁주의 신학에 근거한 공동예배의 회복 방안을 성령과 공동기도의 실천에 집중해서 제안한다. 우리 시대의 예배는 온라인 예배 방식에 의해서 디지털 영적 구도자들이 증가하고, 메시지 수용과 새로운 깨달음에 집중하는 소비주의적 경험 추구로 인해서 예배의 전인적 참여가 약화되며, 공동예배를 개인적인 만족과 성취를 위한 수단화로 간주하면서 공동체성과 공공성을 상실하고 있다. 이러한 예배 현실에서 주어지는 회복의 과제는 방황하는 예배자들을 다시 공동체로 환대하고, 지식과 깨달음을 넘어선 예배의 전인적 참여를 회복하며, 예배와 삶의 간격을 좁히고 유기적으로 통합시켜 주는 것이다. 개혁주의 신학은 예배에서 성령의 역사를 강조하고 은혜의 방편으로서 공동기도를 강화한다. 예배 구성과 실천에서 성령의 역사에 참여하는 기도를 강화하는 것은 우리 시대 예배 회복의 과제에 대한 대안이 될 수 있다. 특히, 예배의 초청과 기도, 조명기도, 도고 기도는 공예배에서 성령의 역사를 통한 회복을 위한 구체적인 실천이 된다.

This study delves into how the practice of communal worship of the Reformed Church in Korea, which is based on Reformed theology and affected by today’s pandemic, can be restored to a process of “reformed and always reforming.” To this end, this study proposes a restorative approach to communal worship based on Reformed theology, focusing on the practice of the Holy Spirit and common prayer. Worship in our time is losing its communality and publicity, with the rise of digital spiritual seekers driven by online worship, the pursuit of consumerist experiences focused on message acceptance for new enlightenment, weakening holistic participation in worship, and viewing communal worship as a mere instrument for personal satisfaction and fulfillment. The task of restoration in this reality of worship is to welcome wandering worshipers back into community, to restore holistic participation in worship beyond knowledge and enlightenment, and to organically integrate the gap between worship and life. Reformed theology emphasizes the work of the Holy Spirit in worship and strengthens communal prayer as a means of grace. Strengthening prayer to participate in the work of the Holy Spirit in the composition and practice of worship can be an alternative to the task of restoring worship in our time. In particular, invitations to worship and opening prayers, prayers of illumination, and intercessory prayers become concrete practices for restoration through the work of the Holy Spirit in public worship.
