This is a brief survey of issues concerning so-called “church keys.” Originally adapted from the original language by Joel Lester, this term has been further adopted by several researchers. As the name of Lester's book, Between Modes and Keys: German Theory 1592-1802, manifests, his main focus is on the role “church keys” played in the transitional process from modal to tonal concepts of music. Powers's studies, however, concentrated on the other side of historic fence, the historical background for Banchieri's list of “church keys” in 1605. Another interesting topic is the utilization of “church keys” by the purely instrumental ensemble music in the seventeenth century. This eventually leads into the thorny question of whether the transition from modality to tonality was a smooth one or reveals a completely new way of thinking. Such process was examined through the works of Corelli, Fischer, and Bach, and finally from the perspective adapted from Michel Foucault's The Order of Things.
