Bach's <Crucifixus> from «B minor Mass» is an important piece that shows the change of text-music relationship around the mid-eighteenth century. Since it is equipped with an 'emblem of lament (which is the ostinato descending tetrachord bass)', listeners may expect the close text-music relationship of typical Baroque laments. The movement, however, bears the characteristics of instrumental passacaglia instead of the vocal lament. In this piece, the relationship between text and music is not very close. In fact, the text is not emotional at all, it just reports an event. Therefore, the task of expressing the emotion became entirely the matter of music. The change from the subsidiary to the central role of music in vocal piece is not the phenomenon that could be found in this specific piece of music. Rather, it reflects the change of the frame of thinking, and the shift of the 'epistemé.'
