In the 18th century the Esterházy princes were considered to be famous patrons of culture. Especially Paul II. Anton (1711-1762) and his brother Nikolaus I. (1714-1790) reached a climax of music culture at the Esterházy court. Most notably, Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) contributed to that in his role as Kapellmeister. The Esterházy music culture was closely linked to the political and social circumstances in Vienna and strengthened bonds among the noble families as well as to the House of Habsburg. The court music of the Esterházy family not only served to aggrandize the own family but the whole Habsburg Empire.
