A Study for Hexatonic System Based on Neo-Riemannian Theory

  • 12

The present study explores chromatic chord progressions and chromatic modulations in triads in tonal works. It consists of two parts: in the first part the main focus is on the historical background and basic theoretical concepts of neo-Riemannian Transformation Theory. In the second the study is analyzing Chopin’s Ballade, Op. 47 in the viewpoint of harmonic circles on regular patterns of the transformation called Hexatonic System based on neo-Riemannian theory. Chromatic harmonic progressions are frequently appeared in the 19th-century music, but many of them are ambiguous when we analyze them. By using neo-Riemannian theory, the study can present more logical analysis than the conventional one. The logical analysis of the ‘common tone relation’ on neo-Riemannian theory will offer to reveal the relations among chromatic chord progressions.
