Dilthey's hemeneutics and musical hermeneutics: focusing on Kretzschmar and Schering

Kretzschmar and Schering's reading of musical work in terms of its extra musical aspects greatly differs from Diltheys'. In particular, Kretzschmar's hermeneutics, which is based on the Doctrine of Affections, is fairly limited to the reading of Affekt. This, in turn, shows great contrast with Dilthey's hermeneutics because it does not address musical expression as a complete reflection of life and historical context. Meanwhile, Schering considers musical expression to be a true and dynamic reflection of life. For Schering, musical expression takes on the form of symbols. Moreover, his approach allows us to trace Dilthey's influence that the relationship between the symbols can be read within social as well as historical contexts.
