The present paper focuses on the origin, history, and style of practical Saraband from the late 16th to the early 18th centuries. It distinguishes the practical Saraband from the musical Saraband which does not intend to accompany real dances. Practical Saraband has a vague origin and dramatic history. It started as a lascivious dance either from New World or Iberian Peninsula. However, it became one of the most sincere and slow dances in the Louis XIV's court. The paper traces this change and considers some critical questions which arise from the study.
